Artist jennifer maestre creates sculptures inspired by the form of sea urchins. she is intrigued by their texture’s defensive properties and its dangerous allure. however her material of choice is a little unexpected: pencils. instead of gluing the pencils together she drills holes in them, turning them into beads that can be threaded together to make her forms. the result is oddly organic forms that are both abstract and sea urchin-like.
